Chateau Galoupet Cru Classe Rose 2022 750ml
A cellar full of aging rosé bottles isn’t something many of us have seen in our lives, let alone heard of, but at Château Galoupet in Provence it’s a real thing.
Matured in 600-liter French oak barrels after its fermentation, the wine has long been valued for its evolution and secondary characteristics that develop over time in the bottle. For that reason alone, it’s been referred among aficionados to as Provence’s “serious” rosé, referring to its complexity that outshines the everyday rosé category.
If you’re looking for a serious bottle of rosé to bring to dinner tonight, it doesn’t get much better than this for the price. Only 18 properties in Provence are designated as Cru Classé dating back to 1955, and Château Galoupet is considered among the best.
Showcasing both a richer, more full-bodied mouthfeel, combined with a freshness of acidity and mineral finish, there are few rosés that offer this much fruit without sacrificing balance in the process. Château Galoupet’s winemaking team both picks and ferments each plot of the vineyard separately, with 30% of those individual wines being vinified in 600L French oak demi-muids and left to age on the lees for an additional 5 months.
There are few rosés in the world that receive the care and attention that the 2022 Château Galoupet has received and that quality is palpable in every sip. For those searching for rosé excellence, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything fancier than this.
91+ POINTS: ROBERT PARKER’S WINE ADVOCATE – A blend of 58% Grenache, 12% Tibouren, 11% Syrah, 11% Rolle, 6% Cinsault and 2% Sémillon, the 2022 Cotes de Provence Rose was matured 30% in 600-liter French oak barrels (62% new and 38% one-year-old) and left on the lees for four to five months. Fresh and gently oaky, the bouquet is refined and complex with aromas of pear, peach, red berries, spices, grapefruit, menthol, iodine and red berries. Juicy and fresh, the wine is perfectly balanced, sappy and textured on the palate, with a long, very fresh finish. It needs one or two years in bottle, but you can already see its potential.
