The original 10 year Johnnie Walker rye cask finish was a sensation when it first launched nearly a decade ago, adding the richness of new American oak finishing with the spiciness of American rye whiskey, and lending a viscosity to quality blended Scotch whisky that was entirely new to the genre. Even single malt snobs were taken by the flavor profile, giving their approval for JW’s exploration into a new space.
Years later, Johnnie Walker incorporated roughly 60% of rye into its grain whisky component and took the phenomenon further, releasing an NAS (non-age statement) line called Johnnie Walker High Rye for about $30. This time around the base of the whisky is that 60% rye aged in American new oak casks and it’s bolstered by core single malts from Cardhu, adding that textbook vanilla richness and creamy texture to the spiciness of the rye. Again, the result was delicious and whisky fans were pleased.
