Description
Torres Acosta Rosso Pirrera 2020
90% Nerello Mascalese/10% other local varieties. Pirrera is a single site at 850 meters on the north side of Mt. Etna; named for the volcanic rocks strewn about the vineyard. The vineyard had been abandoned decades before Eduardo took on its rehabilitation. The planting is mostly Nerello Mascalese but also contains co-planted Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and Garnacha and indigenous white varietals. The vines average around 50 years in age and. The sandy soils are rich in volcanic ash and stones.
The bunches are hand-harvested, vinified as a mix of whole clusters and destemmed berries, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control in concrete tank. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 16 months in concrete tank with minimal racking. It is bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.
